The short answer
Hot sleepers want a lower tog than the season suggests, usually a 4.5 tog for summer and a 7 to 9 tog for winter, paired with a breathable natural filling like wool, silk, or a good cotton or bamboo duvet. These wick moisture and let heat escape, so you stay comfortable rather than clammy. Weight is not the enemy. Trapped heat is.
Drop the tog by a band
The simplest change is to go one tog band cooler than the usual advice. A 7 tog in winter with the heating on often beats a stuffy 13.5, and a 4.5 tog handles most summer nights. If you share a bed with someone who feels the cold, the two-duvet approach lets each of you pick your own tog on the same bed, which ends the nightly battle over the covers.

The most breathable fillings
Filling matters more than tog for a hot sleeper, because two duvets at the same tog can feel completely different.
- Wool is the standout. It regulates temperature and pulls moisture away, so it rarely feels stuffy.
- Silk is light and drapes close without holding heat, which suits warm sleepers well.
- Cotton and bamboo are naturally breathable and wick sweat, and they wash easily.
- Down feels weightless but can trap more heat, so choose a lower tog if you go natural down.
- Hollowfibre and dense synthetics are the ones to avoid, since they tend to trap heat and moisture.
Other ways to sleep cooler
The duvet is only part of it. Switch to breathable cotton or linen sheets, keep the bedroom aired and dark during the day, and wear light natural-fibre nightwear. A mattress or topper that traps heat can undo a good duvet, so if you still overheat, look there next. On the hottest nights, a single cotton flat sheet with no duvet is often the coolest option of all.
