How this works

The tool uses the same starting points as our main tog finder. It works out a tog for each of you from the season, your room and how warm you sleep, then looks at the gap between the two. The numbers are a starting point rather than a tested result, because people's sleep temperature varies.

Your options, compared

One shared duvet. It's the simplest and looks tidiest. It only works when you want roughly the same warmth.

Shared duvet plus a blanket. It's cheap to try, and you may already own what you need. The blanket stays on one side, though it can drift in the night.

Split tog duvet. Each side has its own warmth, so you keep one duvet on the bed. There's less choice, and it's a poor fit if you often swap sides.

Two single duvets. You each get your own tog and nobody steals the covers. You'll need two covers, and the bed looks a bit different. A single duvet on half a double is also a generous fit, so check the sizes with our duvet size guide.

If an all-seasons set is on your list, our combine two duvets calculator shows how the togs add up.

Common questions

What tog duvet is best for couples? There's no single best tog, because it depends on your room and how warm each of you sleeps. Start with the tog each person would choose alone. If the two are close, share a duvet between them. If they're far apart, two separate duvets are usually simpler.

What if one of us is hot and the other is cold? Choose a duvet that suits the hotter sleeper, then add a blanket on the colder person's side. If the gap is large, use two separate duvets, or look at a split tog duvet with a different warmth on each side.

Can a couple use two single duvets on a double bed? Yes. Each person gets their own tog and their own covers, so nobody loses the duvet in the night. The bed looks different, and you'll need a cover for each duvet.

Why choose for the hotter sleeper? It's usually easier for a cold sleeper to add warmth with a blanket or warmer nightwear than for a hot sleeper to lose heat under a duvet that's too warm.
