For pure cotton sheets, the sweet spot is roughly 200 to 400 thread count. Below 180 can feel coarse, and anything advertised above 800 is usually marketing rather than a real gain in quality. Once you are past about 400, the type of cotton and the weave matter far more than the number. A well-made 300 thread count sheet in good cotton beats a cheap 1000 count every time.

What thread count actually means

Thread count is the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric, counting both directions. In theory, more threads means a denser, smoother sheet. In practice, there is a ceiling to how many normal threads fit in a square inch, so very high numbers are usually reached by counting multi-ply threads or thin, lower-quality yarns. That inflates the number without improving the sheet, which is why a huge thread count can actually feel worse.

Why the cotton matters more

The fibre does most of the work. Long-staple cottons such as Egyptian and Pima produce longer, finer, stronger yarns that feel smoother and last longer, even at a modest thread count. Cheaper short-staple cotton feels rougher and pills sooner whatever the number on the pack. So when you shop, look at the type of cotton first and treat thread count as a rough guide, not a score.

Aim for 200 to 400 thread count in a named long-staple cotton, and pick percale if you sleep hot or sateen if you like it soft and warm. Do not pay a premium for a four-figure thread count. Getting the sheet size right matters just as much as the feel, so check the correct bed and sheet size for your mattress before you buy.
